Setting up the app

Unfold Counter learns when your phone opens or closes from two automations in Apple's Shortcuts app. iOS doesn't let apps create automations for you, so you add them yourself. The guided setup in the app walks you through it, and you can reopen it any time from Settings → Setup guide.

  1. Import the two shortcuts, Unfold Counter Opened and Unfold Counter Closed, using the buttons in the app.
  2. In Shortcuts, open the Automation tab and tap +.
  3. Choose the iPhone trigger for Opened, then add the action Run Shortcut and choose Unfold Counter Opened.
  4. Choose Run Immediately and turn off Notify When Run.
  5. Repeat for Closed with Unfold Counter Closed.

Troubleshooting

The counts don't change when I open or close my phone

  • Open Shortcuts → Automation and check that both automations exist and are turned on.
  • Make sure each automation is set to Run Immediately. If it asks for confirmation first, it won't run on its own.
  • Check that each automation runs the right shortcut: Opened runs Unfold Counter Opened, and Closed runs Unfold Counter Closed.
  • In the app, open Settings and look at the automation status card. It shows when the last opening and closing were received.

The widget shows 0 or doesn't update

  • Open the app once, then go back to your Home Screen and wait a few seconds.
  • If it still shows 0, remove the widget and add it again.
  • Widgets refresh on their own schedule. iOS decides when a widget redraws, so a small delay is normal.

The angle tile says "Unavailable"

The hinge angle comes from the iPhone Duo's hinge sensor. On a phone without one, the tile can't show a reading. Everything else in the app works normally.

I want a darker look

In Settings, choose True Black for a pure black background. For widgets, press and hold the widget, tap Edit Widget, and pick an appearance.

My counts disappeared

Your history is stored on your iPhone and, if iCloud backup is on (Settings → iCloud backup), in your own iCloud. After reinstalling the app or moving to a new iPhone, sign in with the same Apple Account and open the app. Your history comes back on its own, then add the two automations again from Settings → Setup guide. Without iCloud backup, deleting the app erases the data. Updating the app always keeps it.

iCloud backup says it is unavailable or paused

  • Make sure you are signed in to iCloud in the iPhone Settings app and that iCloud Drive is allowed for Unfold Counter.
  • If your iCloud storage is full, backup pauses and continues when there is space. The app keeps working normally either way.
  • In the app, open Settings → iCloud backup and tap Back up now to retry.

Your privacy

The app collects no data, and the optional iCloud backup is only in your own iCloud. Read the full privacy policy.
